Fears, routines and fresh air

"Take my picture."
“Take my picture. I am beautiful.”

January was relentless. First proper full-time job, early rises, future thoughts, family emergencies and travelling.

I tried the 14-day Healthy Living Challenge January 1st – 14th. It maybe wasn’t the best time to try to implement big healthy changes because I started work on the 5th, but it didn’t go too badly. Following along with Celes’ daily challenges provided a lot to think about in terms of having a healthy relationship with food and self-image and the difference between ideal routines and what actually ends up happening. One of the only things I feel I’ve accomplished from it, and that’s stuck since, has been managing to do some yoga every day. My other continuous goals keep getting thrashed by life.

I flew alone and for the first time since a school trip. Nothing quite beats discovering a mild fear of flying during take-off; once I’d stopped crying when we were in the air things really improved… Big thanks go to Grant the Irish prison security guard for offering to hold my hand during descent on the return flight – I didn’t take you up on the offer, Grant, but wherever you are, good karma is coming your way. I’m flying again at the end of the month, so hoping things go better this time.

Sadly not the greatest picture, but definitely a rare moment to photograph.

A cool London building

I don’t even know why I took this! I suppose tall skyscrapers are pretty non-existant in Edinburgh. London in the cold air was brisk, sleek and busy – tall office buildings just epitomise it.

helix2

Helix, my absolute favourite new show from last year, has returned with a vengeance and is again not for the faint-hearted. Hats off to the writers who have managed to turn the ice-filled bleak desolation of the first season into a warm and jungley Lost-style cultish explosion of yellow goo. Definitely worth checking out.

Just trying to take each day as it comes.

Is this all there is?

I sit here with a tissue shoved up each nostril melting slowly into a puddle of Lemsip, Earl Grey and digestive biscuits. I haven’t eaten anything but porridge or biscuits for 3 days. That’s not that…

Hello 2016

I definitely overestimated my ability to write here while holding down a full-time job, as well as managing other compulsory life stuff. I think I’ve overestimated my ability to do anything… or at least, it feels like…

Firstly, it’s so great to see you writing, and great to have this snapshot into what starting the year was like for you. Secondly, that picture of you – total fire! Thirdly, I tried to watch helix and found it super confusing, does it get better? If you recommend I might give it another chance. (P.S. if you like Sci-Fi The Expanse has been something I’ve really enjoyed.)

Stay positive A, look forward to seeing you soon!

Ashley! Oh my gosh, hello! Thank you 😀 Actually, objectively, Helix is probably not the greatest show in the world. I liked it because it kind of filled that Lost / X Files void, but it felt like it always lacked something. It got cancelled after the second season so there’s no resolution to the story, sadly. It did pick up, but was sort of always average. Maybe leave it if you aren’t into it! I would say Extant is better, although it didn’t last very long either as it got a bit worse further on. Probably the most gripping thing I watched recently was Fortitude, which keeps you guessing, and How to Get Away with Murder just outshines everything all the time! 🙂 I haven’t heard of The Expanse – I will definitely try it, thank you, always on the hunt for more TV. I’m hoping Person of Interest returns soon too!

Hope too see you soon as well 😀
