I feel I’m maybe a bit behind the times here but recently heard the song ‘Recover’ by CHVRCHES on the radio. It was a live version of them playing at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Glasgow a couple of weeks ago and I fell in love with it instantly. The lead singer was brilliant live and her voice was gorgeously haunting despite being projected across a large crowd.
It turns out CHVRCHES are actually from Glasgow which is awesome because I think Scotland has some fantastic home-grown music talent that is deserving of more recognition. Cinephile, another electro/synth group with a female vocalist, are also from Glasgow and produce songs which are just as heart-breaking and poignant.
I’m always wary of interpreting song lyrics because I think they speak to everyone in different ways and we naturally tend to assign our own experiences to them to give them meaning. Yet, I think the lyrics of ‘Recover’ are quite clear – they’re about desperately trying to start again with someone, putting yourself on the line and waiting precariously for their response, when deep down you already know what it’s going to be. This is too painful.
I’ll give you one more chance
To say we can change our old ways
And you take what you need
And you don’t need me
It’s an absolutely beautiful song with an ’80s vibe and definitely worth listening to.
